The genesis of NEHU traces back to the year 1973 when the Parliament of India passed the North-Eastern Hill University Act. This visionary legislation aimed to create a central university catering to the educational needs of the diverse communities residing in the hilly regions of the North-Eastern states. On 19th July 1973, the university was officially inaugurated by the then President of India, V. V. Giri, marking the beginning of a new era in higher education in the region.

Since its inception, NEHU has been committed to its mission of imparting education, conducting research, and promoting regional development. Today, NEHU stands tall as a symbol of academic brilliance, nurturing talents from various disciplines and inspiring generations of students to pursue knowledge and innovation.
