The idea of establishing a National Sports University was conceived as early as 1995, with the formation of the Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education (LNCPE) as a part of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. However, it was in 2018 that the National Sports University Act was passed by the Parliament of India, leading to the formal establishment of the National Sports University on 5th October 2018.

The NSU was envisioned to play a pivotal role in promoting sports education, research, and innovation in India. With a focus on producing skilled professionals, coaches, and administrators, the university aims to raise the bar for sports excellence and foster a sporting culture across the nation.
