The Irish Home Rule Movement and other home rule movements served as inspiration for the Indian Home Rule Movement, which took place in British India. The independence movement, led by Annie Besant and Bal Gangadhar Tilak among the educated, upper-class Indians who spoke English, is thought to have been sparked by the roughly two-year-long movement that took place between 1916 and 1918. The Swarajya Sabha took the place of the All India Home Rule League in 1920.
