The International Meteorological Organization (IMO) was replaced on March 23, 1950, by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), an agency of the United Nations. In order to coordinate member nation actions in the areas of meteorology, operational hydrology, and earth sciences for the protection of their populations, it started operating in 1951. March 23, 1961, was the inaugural World Meteorological Day.
