When did the National Institute of Oceanography get its start? The National Institute of Oceanography is a self-governing research agency in India that carries out scientific research and studies on the distinctive oceanographic features of the northern Indian Ocean. It was established on January 1, 1966, as one of the 38 constituent laboratories of the CSIR. Its regional offices are located in Kochi, Mumbai, and Vizag. Its headquarters are in Goa.
