The idea of establishing an international Hindi university was conceived in 1989 by the Indian government. Subsequently, the Central Government introduced the Central Universities Act, 1993, and in 1994, the Parliament of India passed the Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya Act. On 8th March 1997, the university was formally inaugurated by the then President of India, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, in Wardha, Maharashtra.

The primary objective behind the establishment of MGAHV was to celebrate Hindi as a global language and foster its reach beyond India’s borders. As an institution of higher learning, MGAHV has been contributing significantly to Hindi literature, linguistics, translation, and cultural studies.
