The Government of India Act 1935 established the high court with effect from April 5, 1948, for the then-province of Assam, and the governor-general of India promulgated the Gauhati High Court on March 1, 1948. The North-Eastern Areas Act of 1971 changed its name from the High Court of Assam and Nagaland to the Gauhati High Court.
