Britain is where modern football first originated in the 19th century. Even while “folk football” had been playing with different rules since the Middle Ages, it only underwent standardization when it became a winter sport in public schools. The Football Association was established in 1863, and after the first cup match between regional football clubs in Britain was held there, they formalized the game’s regulations.
