The British Parliament passed a piece of law on August 2, 1858, known as the Government of India Act. The then-Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Lord Palmerston, proposed a bill to hand over the power of the Indian government from the East India Company to the Crown in reaction to the system’s significant shortcomings.
